Police officer beheaded as Rivers rerun turns bloody

- The Rivers state election has claimed the life of a police officer

- DSP Alkali Mohammed was beheaded during the election on Saturday, December 10

- The state police command is yet to issue an official statement

Rivers rerun election was marred by violence

As reports of violence in some areas of Rivers state continue to emanate. The Nigerian army in its official report stated that a police officer, DSP Alkali Mohammed was beheaded during the election.

According to Premium Times, Mr Mohammed, who was a deputy superintendent of police, was killed during an ambush at Omoku, Onelga Local Government Area.

He was reportedly killed alongside his orderly. Some police officers confirmed Mr Mohammed’s death stating that he was a member of the Mobile Police 19 team in Port Harcourt and that he was a brave officer as well as the son of a retired police officer.

CLEEN a group in Rivers state that works with law enforcement in monitoring elections. condemned the perpetrators, saying:

“We call on the inspector general of police to investigate all cases of voter harassment and intimidation during the elections, especially the alleged shooting to death of Mr Mbari John MeeBari, killing of DSP Alkali Mohammed and his orderly who was beheaded during an ambush at Omoku, Onelga LGA."

The Rivers police spokesperson is yet to make an official statement on the death.

Meanwhile, the army had this to say:

"The mobile police organized a rescue mission. Regrettably, the team discovered that DSP Alkali Mohammed of mobile police unit 48 was beheaded along with his orderly.

"The patrol vehicle was taken away with weapons, 3 policemen escaped while 5 were missing in action.

"This is the same area where soldiers of 34 Brigade were ambushed on November 20, 2016, where a soldier was killed. Also on November 21, 2016, 4 personnel of NSCDC were killed and their weapons carted away."
