The anticipated launch comes after a dip in sales of iPhones in the first two quarters of this year, hit by a fall in demand in countries like China.

It has also been suggested the new models will offer faster processors and more memory.

Another reported update was that Apple will be getting rid of the analogue 3.5mm headphone jack to make the phone thinner and possibly waterproof.

However, one leading analyst is predicting the iPhone 7 will include one very useful feature for photo buffs - four LED flash lights, two in cool colours and two in warm colours, and an ambient light sensor.

Few changes are expected with most commentators predicting the next big overhaul will come in 2017 when Apple marks 10 years since the iPhone's debut.

The invites carried the tagline "See you on the 7th" - which could be taken as a reference to the name of the iPhone 7, as well as the date.

Apple sent out invitations to an event at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium but did not say what it was about.
