A loaded gun was found in former NFL player Will Smith's car on the night he was shot dead, police have said.

The weapon was one of three recovered by investigators after Smith was killed during a traffic-related altercation in New Orleans on Saturday night.

Police did not say whether the loaded 9mm handgun found in Smith's Mercedes SUV belonged to him or someone else.

There was no evidence suggesting the weapon had been fired, authorities said.
Cardell Hayes, 28, is charged with shooting dead former NFL star Will Smith in New Orleans
Smith died slumped over the driver's seat of his SUV with the door open, police said.
Suspected gunman Cardell Hayes shot Smith after the two were involved in a three-vehicle crash, authorities said.
CCTV footage uncovered by local television station WVUE appeared to show the retired footballer's SUV bumping Hayes' Hummer H2 from behind minutes before the shooting.
After the collision, the Hummer appeared to pull over, but the video showed the Mercedes speeding away - followed moments later by the Hummer.
An attorney for Hayes said his client caught up with Smith's SUV - crashing into it and sending it into a third vehicle.
The crash sparked a row, which ended with Smith shot dead and his wife with two gunshot wounds to her leg.
Police said Hayes waited for officers to arrive at the scene and identified himself as the shooter.
In addition to the .45-calibre handgun police say Cardell Hayes used to shoot Smith, investigators found a second loaded revolver inside Hayes' vehicle.
The 28-year-old faces a second-degree murder charge and is being held on $1m bond.
He also faces possible charges related to the gunshot wounds suffered by Smith's wife.
Meanwhile, the Saints and Smith's family announced that a public visitation will be held on Friday to honour Smith, who was a fan favourite in New Orleans.
A private funeral and burial will be held on Saturday.
