Young Twins Rescued From Drifting Ice Floe
Nine-year-old twins had to be rescued by fire crews after they became stranded on an ice floe as it drifted away from shore.
The boy and girl had been playing by the water’s edge at Charlottetown in eastern Canada on Easter Sunday.
Sergeant Walter Vessey of Charlottetown police told Toronto’s Metro News: "They happened to jump on a piece of ice that actually was floating rather than sitting on the mud.
"And as they jumped on it, it started to float away from shore
"It kept drifting out a little further and further."
Pictures released by the local fire department showed an inflatable boat being used by a rescue team to retrieve the pair.
The children weren’t harmed, but appeared to be pleased when the boat arrived.
"I'm sure their mothers were plenty stressed when they came down to get them after they were rescued,” Sgt Vessey said.
Two other friends they'd been playing with had jumped off and managed to make it back to shore before authorities arrived.
