Murray-Bruce wants gas flaring stopped as senate debates climate change

The Senate yesterday passed for second reading a bill for an Act to provide for Climate Change and Global Greenhouse Emission Reduction.
The bill titled: “A bill for an Act to Provide for measures to address climate change with a view to assisting to achieve a sustainable future for the country,” sponsored by Senator Isah Misau (APC, Bauchi Central).

Contributing to the bill, Senator Ben Murray-Bruce (PDP, Bayelsa East) said the Western world have brainwashed us by bringing obsolete factories into the country, stressing that the Ministers of Petroleum and Environment should be summoned to come and explain why the country still flares gas and urged the executive to come to face the reality on ground.

Murray-Bruce said, “Gas flaring in Nigeria, there are laws after laws for it to be stopped. I think the Minister of Petroleum should be summoned here to explain why we have not stopped gas flaring. This is a very serious issue. We laugh about it but we are also very guilty.

In his lead debate, Misau said the objective of the bill is basically aimed at promoting action within the country that provides consistency with national and international schemes designed to address climate change, including schemes that relate to emissions trading and emission reporting.

According to the senator, “climate change is a consequence of global warming, which is essentially an ecological reaction to the gradual increase in the earth surface temperature. This has in recent times resulted in incidence of hotter summers, severe snow storms, increasing flooding, remarkable shift in the traditional weather pattern and growing climate uncertainty and unpredictability.
