Military arrests suspected members of Niger Delta Avengers
The Nigerian military has announced the arrest of suspected members of the Niger Delta Avengers, a militant group which has claimed responsibilities for latest attacks on oil installations in the Niger Delta.
“This is to confirm the arrest of some suspected members of Niger Delta Avengers,” in connection with attacks on Chevron oil facilities, military spokesman Rabe Abubakar said.
Abubakar said the “military will continue to do its best to safeguard strategic facilities and provide security to lives and property” but did not mention how many members of the group were apprehended.
Recent assaults on oil infrastructure have led to a cut in Nigeria’s output to 1.65 million barrels a day from 2.2 million at the start of the year.
Niger Delta Avengers had claimed to be fighting for the independence of the Niger Delta and has warned oil firms to leave the region.
The group also declared it wanted a greater share of oil revenues and an end to oil pollution.
