Government officials' convoy cause road accidents - Sultan
– The Sultan of Sokoto has accused government officials’ convoy of reckless driving
– He charged the FRSC to arrest and prosecute road traffic offenders
– He called for the implementation of use of the speed limit device in vehicles
The Sultan made this known at the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) annual lecture in Abuja on Tuesday, April 5.
Sultan Abubakar expressed concerns at the failure of the FRSC to stop, caution such drivers adding that the corps should do the ‘unimaginable’ by arresting any dignitary or convoy driver who is reckless.
The traditional ruler urged Boboye Oyeyemi, the corps marshal to give special marshals the power to arrest motorists who drive wrongly.
He noted that over-speeding was not the only cause of road accidents, saying: “If you maintain your car properly, avoid the use of cell phones while driving, check your tyres and ensure that every part of the car is in order, there will hardly be accidents on the roads.”
He called for the implementation of use of the speed limit device in vehicles to control over-speeding.
Meanwhile, Boboye Oyeyemi, the FRSC corps marshal, has confirmed a total of 98 road crashes and 77 deaths nationwide during the Easter holidays.
He stated that the commission apprehended 6,223 traffic offenders adding that 358 people sustained various degrees of injuries, while 165 of the victims were rescued alive from the crashes.
